Let’s drive the future skills development and pathways for our industry

Why

The Victorian Skills Commission provides advice to the Hon Gayle Tierney MP, Minister for Training and Skills, on the following:

• How the training system can better support the economy and jobs by addressing skills shortages, meeting workforce training needs and boosting productivity for employers.
• How industry input can lead to more strategic and targeted interventions to align the training system with industry needs.
• The training needs of existing and emerging industries.
• Promoting training pathways that lead to jobs and skills development in the workforce.
• Addressing the training and workforce development needs of Victoria’s regions.

Aligning education and training offered by local institutions and Registered Training Organisation, with the current and future needs of the state and regional economies, will be vital in the years ahead.

Just as important as delivering the right training and education, is ensuring that the right pathways are available for people to transition from training into work. The VSC supports the process of establishing and growing these pathways, particularly into priority sectors.

What

The Victorian Skills Commissioner recently launched a project to develop of a series of ‘sector skills profiles’ for Victoria, focused on metropolitan areas. The profiles aim to establish a genuine understanding of the current and future (1-3 year horizon) skills and training requirements of specific industry sectors. These profiles will complement work completed on the regional skills demand profiles in regional Victoria.

One of the first sectors that the Commissioner is focusing is the Civil Construction area. This project will provide the Commissioner with intelligence in order to inform and provide advice to the Minister for Training and Skills. This advice will be providing information on potential opportunities and current barriers to the uptake of Civil Construction related VET in Victoria.  This advice will include actions that could be put in place to address the issues raised. This project is titled – Civil Sector Skills Profile.

How

This is an opportunity to get involved and shape the future training approaches. We want to know about your experiences and what do you expect from the training system. The success of this project, and the future skills development for the civil construction industry, relies on insights from experienced employers, who can provide a sector-wide view of skills requirements and workforce challenges.

When

Meeting 1: 2nd December 4.00pm – 6.30pm

This meeting will cover overall sector outlook, employer needs and workforce trends. It will include a discussion on overall sector performance, workforce composition and challenges, and the likely impact of current/future trends on the workforce.

Meeting 2: 9th December 4.00pm – 6.30pm

This meeting will cover: investment in training and key skills and qualifications. It will focus on each of the key job roles in the sector to understand the sectors preferred approach to workforce development, required skills and qualifications. We’ll also look at overall investment in training, potential career pathways and identify challenges and opportunities for the VET system to support to sector.
